How teachers can beat the winter blues

With the days getting darker, shorter and colder, winter can have an impact on the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff. The change in season can affect mood, energy levels and motivation, with many people experiencing what is commonly known as the ‘winter blues’.

Busy school days and reduced daylight can make it difficult for teaching professionals to prioritise self-care and maintain a positive mindset. The winter blues can lead to feelings of tiredness, irritability, low mood and difficulty concentrating, making it important to recognise when these feelings begin to affect everyday life.

There are several simple ways teaching professionals can help manage the winter blues, including:

  • Staying active and getting outside in natural daylight.
  • Making time to socialise with friends and family.
  • Trying a new hobby or switching up their routine.
  • Practising self-care and making time for things they enjoy.
  • Prioritising sleep, rest and a balanced diet.
  • Surrounding themselves with supportive people.

Small changes to a teachers daily routine can make a big difference to their wellbeing during the winter months. Taking time to look after themselves is also essential for effectively supporting students.

Specialist education recruitment agency, Spencer Clarke Group, are exploring how teachers and education staff can beat the winter blues in schools and prioritise their mental health.
