Raising children does not come with an instruction manual. There is no option to ‘turn to pg. 6 for epic tantrums in a public place’. One of the hardest parts of parenting is supporting our children with managing their big feelings, especially when our own feelings can be triggered. Worries and anxiety in children are something that we all experience from time to time, but supporting our children when they are struggling is often about managing both their feelings, and our own.
As parents, we are hard-wired to want to smooth the path ahead for our children, and prevent them from experiencing any negative emotions. However, emotions such as fear and anxiety are inevitable and part of life. The best thing we can do as parents [and teachers] is to support our children in how to manage their worries and how to process big, uncomfortable feelings.
This blog is all about helping children overcome fear and anxiety written by Laura Kay, Character Education team manager at Role Models.
