European Code Week: Croydon Pupils Crack The Code

Pupils from a Croydon school have been putting their technology skills to the test for Code Week – a special event which celebrates computer programming across Europe and the world.

Now in its 7th year, Code Week aims to make coding more accessible to young people, and to highlight its importance for future jobs. Over 4 million people in over 80 countries took part in 2019.
Pupils at Christ Church C of E Primary School have been busy designing apps and computer games using Discovery Education Coding, an award-winning coding platform for primary schools. To mark Code Week, Year 5 pupils created their own amazing driving games, using coding to make cars move around a track. They programmed the cars to steer and accelerate and enjoyed sharing the finished games with their classmates.
Julia Elfred, Computing Team Lead at the school said:
“Our pupils regularly enjoy coding as part of computing lessons, and the Discovery Education platform makes it easy for them to learn to program. Designing the racing car games was something they really enjoyed. Coding is such an important skill for the future. It develops children’s problem-solving skills and helps them to build confidence and creativity.”
Discovery Education Coding is one of the UK’s leading primary computing resources, used by over 2000 schools across the country. The award-winning platform is currently being used by thousands of teachers to support blended learning in the classroom and at home.
Code Week takes place between the 10th and 25th October 2020. Find out more at www.codeweek.eu
